Hazardous products can cause serious injury or illness if not handled properly – even in tourism and hospitality settings. From cleaning supplies in hotels and lodges to pool chemicals at resorts, fuel for tour boats, or maintenance products in cultural centres, hazardous materials are more common than you might think. The Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) is Canada’s national standard for sharing information about these risks. This essential training gives tourism professionals the knowledge to stay safe, protect guests, and meet legal workplace safety requirements. What You’ll Take Away

  • The ability to recognize hazardous materials and their associated risks
  • Knowledge of key responsibilities for workers and employers
  • How to read and interpret WHMIS labels and pictograms
  • How to use Safety Data Sheets (SDSs) to stay informed and safe
  • Valid WHMIS certification for 3 years

Who Should Attend? This course is for anyone working in tourism or hospitality who may be exposed to hazardous materials on the job. It's especially valuable for those in maintenance, housekeeping, food services, and operations. Session Details This is an online, self-paced course you can take on your own schedule. It takes about 1.5 hours to complete, and you can work through it in a way that fits your life and commitments. Eligibility Indigenous Tourism BC may cover the full costs of this training for eligible participants:

  • Indigenous peoples (First Nations, Inuit, Metis) residing in BC
  • Indigenous-owned tourism businesses (51%+ Indigenous ownership), and employees of
  • First Nations-owned tourism businesses (51%+ First Nations ownership), and employees of
  • First Nations Communities in BC
